Patriot Day, also known as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, is observed every year on September 11 to pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake the plane. Thousands of firefighters, police officers and emergency personnel also risked their lives responding to the tragedy.
New Britain has traditionally marked the anniversary with ceremonies designed to bring the community together in remembrance. Veterans groups, city leaders and residents gather to reflect on the loss, honor the courage shown in 2001 and reaffirm a shared commitment to resilience.
"The horrific terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 left a lasting impact on our country’s history, as well as the lives of the victims, survivors, first responders and all American citizens,” Mayor Erin Stewart said. "New Britain’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony provides an important moment to reflect on the events of that historic day, honor the lives lost and recognize the acts of heroism and patriotism.”"
